Tuesday prayer & verses (01 09 2009)

Thought for the day

The New Testament says that Jesus walked on water (John 6:16-21), but Professor Doron Nof believes there could be a less miraculous explanation -- he walked on a floating piece of ice. Nof, a professor of oceanography at Florida State University, said on Tuesday that his study found an unusual combination of water and atmospheric conditions in northern Israel which could have led to ice formation on the Sea of Galilee.

A drop in temperature below freezing could have caused ice thick enough to support a human to form on the surface of the freshwater lake near the western shore, Nof said. It might have been nearly impossible for distant observers to see a piece of floating ice surrounded by water. Nof said he offered his study as a "possible explanation" for Jesus' walk on water. It's nothing new.

There have been attempts to "explain away" the miracles of Jesus ever since -- well, ever since the time of Jesus. Every now and then, though, these attempts rise to preposterous levels. William Barclay, a well-known commentator, has attempted to come up with a possible "natural" explanation for many of Jesus' miracles as well. My favorite is probably his explanation of the feeding of the 5,000 (also found in John 6). According to Barclay, many of the people in the crowd had food to eat, but they selfishly kept it to themselves. But when Jesus smiled and shared the loaves and fishes that the little boy brought him, the crowd was moved with remorse. So, when the basket of food passed, they each put in some of their own food so that, in the end, there was plenty for everyone.

The miracle, then, according to Barclay, was not the multiplication of food, but the changing of peoples' hearts. Jesus "turned a crowd of selfish men and women into a fellowship of sharers." (The Gospel of John, Volume 1, p. 206) But, back to Nof's theory. Let me get this straight. The disciples got into a boat and started to cross the Sea of Galilee. It was dark. Jesus conveniently stepped onto a piece of ice which then floated across the sea. While this was happening, "a strong wind started to blow and stir up the sea." (John 6:18, GOD'S WORD).

Apparently Jesus had excellent balance because the wind and the waves were not enough to cause him to fall off of this piece of ice as it drifted several miles directly to the disciples' boat. I don't know about you, but it seems to me that may have taken a bigger miracle than walking on the water! Why would anyone go to such great lengths to try to discount what happened? I can only think of one reason.

If the miracles are indeed true, then they force a person to an undeniable conclusion -- that Jesus was indeed who he claimed to be (the Son of God): "Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." (John 20:30-31) Thanks be to our God who time and again demonstrated his power over nature, disease, Satan, death, and ultimately his own death. We praise Him for His power, and humbly submit ourselves to His will!

The longer we walk this spiritual journey we become more trusting because we’ve seen Your mighty hand and outstretched arm leading us all along the way, just as You led the Israelites out of Egypt. You deliver us from our own peril and provide us with everything we need for this life and the next. We fully trust in You, O Lord Almighty.

Monday prayer & verses (31 08 2009)

Thought for the day

At the end of their first date, a young man takes his favorite girl home. Emboldened by the night, he decides to try for that important first kiss. With an air of confidence, he leans with his hand against the wall and, smiling, he says to her, "Darling, how 'bout a goodnight kiss?"

Horrified, she replies, "Are you mad? My parents will see us!"

"Oh come on! Who's gonna see us at this hour?"

"No, please. Can you imagine if we get caught?"

"Oh come on, there's nobody around, they're all sleeping!"

"No way. It's just too risky!"

"Oh please, please, I like you so much!!"

"No, no, and no. I like you too, but I just can't!"

"Oh yes you can. Please?"

"NO, no. I just can't."

"Pleeeeease?..."

Out of the blue, the porch light goes on, and the girl's sister shows up in her pajamas, hair disheveled. In a sleepy voice the sister says: "Dad says to go ahead and give him a kiss. Or I can do it. Or if need be, he'll come down himself and do it. But for crying out loud, tell him to take his hand off the intercom button!"

How embarrassing to realize that a conversation you thought was being held in secret was known to everyone in the house! There are some things we say that we don't want others to hear and some things we do that we don't want others to know about (sometimes with good reason). But, the truth is, much of what we try to keep hidden from others is because we know that what we are saying and doing is wrong and we don't want others to know about it.

If there's something in your life that you're trying to hide from others, you'd better be careful. And be reminded that there are no secrets we can keep from God. He sees all, He knows all, and He appreciates the person who is honest enough to allow God into every aspect of his life. For those who want to live in secret, the day is coming when those secrets will be revealed.

Paul spoke of "the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel." (Romans 2:16)

Solomon spoke of a time when "God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, whether good or evil." (Ecclesiastes 12:14)

May your live your life every day with the confidence that your hand is on the intercom button, God is on the other end, but you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Father, we pray for those who are walking in the valley of the shadow of death with a loved one today. Give them deep abiding peace and calm assurance in place of worry and fear as they’re confronted with the circumstances that surround them this day. We pray for their loved one who is waging war between life and death, that they will find a place of quiet rest near to Your heart, O God; a place where Your sweet Spirit ministers in ways where human words fall short. Help us to trust You for that which we can’t understand and to search the Scriptures for that which You want us to fully comprehend on this side about life and death. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

VERY INTERESTING CONVERSATION

An Atheist Professor of Philosophy was speaking to his Class on the Problem Science has with GOD, the ALMIGHTY. He asked one of his New Christian Students to stand and . . .

Professor : You are a Christian, aren't you, son?
Student: Yes, sir.

Professor: So, you believe in GOD?
Student: Absolutely, sir.

Professor: Is GOD Good?
Student: Sure.

Professor: Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL?
Student: Yes.

Professor: My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn't how this GOD good is then? Hmm? (Student was silent)

Professor: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, Young Fella. Is GOD Good?
Student: Yes.

Professor: Is Satan good?
Student: No.

Professor: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From. ... GOD . . .

Professor: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this World?
Student: Yes.

Professor: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.

Professor: So who created evil ?
(Student did not answer)

Professor: Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.

Professor: So, who created them?
(Student had no answer)

Professor: Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observe the World around you. Tell me, son . . . Have you ever Seen GOD?
Student: No, sir.

Professor: Tell us if you have ever heard your GOD?
Student: No, sir.

Professor: Have you ever felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Professor: Yet you still believe in HIM?
Student: Yes.

Professor: According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my Faith.

Professor: Yes, Faith. And that is the Problem Science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?

Professor: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as Cold?

Professor: Yes.
Student: No, sir. There isn't.

(The Lecture Theatre became very quiet with this turn of events)
Student: Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, Mega Heat, White Heat, a Little Heat or No Heat. But we don't have anything called Cold. We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as Cold. Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat. We cannot Measure Cold. Heat is Energy. Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.

(There was Pin-Drop Silence in the Lecture Theatre)
Student: What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness?
Professor: Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness?

Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the Absence of Something. You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, and Flashing Light. But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and it's called Darkness, isn't it? In reality, Darkness isn't. If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you?
Professor: So what is the point you are making, Young Man?

Student: Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed.
Professor: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality. You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a Good GOD and a Bad GOD. You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought. It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact that Death cannot exist as a Substantive Thing. Death is Not the Opposite of Life: just the Absence of it.

Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey? Professor: If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir? (The Professor shook his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument was going)
Student: Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and Cannot even prove that this Process is an On-Going Endeavour, Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir? Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?

(The Class was in Uproar) Student: Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain? (The Class broke out into Laughter)
Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain, Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . . No one appears to have done so. So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that You have No Brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust your Lectures, sir? (The Room was Silent. The Professor stared at the Student, his face unfathomable)

Professor : I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son.
Student: That is it sir . . . Exactly! The Link between Man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that Keeps Things Alive and Moving………

Prayer

Jesus, in certain situations I am fearful when You speak to my heart about being obedient. When You compel me like you did Esther to do or say something that’s not within my comfort zone I become fearful of the outcome which prevents me from stepping out in faith and following through with an obedient heart. Would You remind me that there is great blessing when I follow Your leading. Help me not to fear the outcome, for that is in Your hands. Thank You for Your prompting and for entrusting me to be a part of your grand purpose.

Thursday prayer & verses (27 08 2009)

Thought for the day

You've no doubt heard of Murphy's Law ("If anything can go wrong, it will.") You may have even heard of some of the corollaries to Murphy's Law ("If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.") But have you heard of the following new laws:

"The Law of Volunteering" -- If you dance with a grizzly bear, you had better let him lead.

"The Law of Avoiding Oversell" -- When putting cheese in a mousetrap, always leave room for the mouse.

"The Law of Reality" -- Never get into fights with ugly people, they have nothing to lose.

"The Law of Self-Sacrifice" -- When you starve with a tiger, the tiger starves last.

"Weiler's Law" -- Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn't have to do it himself.

"Law of Volunteer Labor" -- People are always available for work in the past tense.

"Conway's Law" -- In any organization there is one person who knows what is going on. That person must be fired.

"Osborne's Law" -- Variables won't; constants aren't.

"Main's Law" -- For every action there is an equal and opposite government program.

"The Law of Fools" -- It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

"Law of Accuracy" -- When working toward the solution of a problem, it always helps if you know the answer.

Corollary: Provided, of course, that you know there is a problem. There are some laws that truly are "laws" in that they always hold true. There are some laws that we wish weren't true. And there are some laws which, fortunately, are eventually removed from the books.

The New Testament speaks about the subject of "law" quite a bit. There is a sharp contrast drawn between the "old law" (given by Moses) and the "new law" (given by Jesus Christ). The apostle Paul spent several chapters in Romans discussing "the law" and its shortcomings (though he makes it clear that the law served an important role in his life).

Then in Romans 8, Paul refers to "the law of sin and death." What is that law? Simply this:

Whoever sins, must die (Rom. 6:23). It's a frightening law because we all know (even when we try to deny it) that we are guilty of sin, and so the punishment is inevitable. Fortunately, there is a "corollary" to the law of sin and death: "For the law of the Spirit in life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:2). There's only one thing that can keep the law of sin and death from having its dreaded effect in our lives -- that's is to live a life "in Jesus Christ" according to the Spirit.

"For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin." (Romans 8:3).

The law brings only the result of punishment. Jesus Christ brings a hope of blessing for those who live in Him. Folks, that's good news!

The way You cared for Moses is a great reminder that we are never without hope and our circumstances are never too grave when we walk in Your ways and trust You for that which concerns us. Amen.

Wednesday prayer & verses (26 08 2009)

I heard about a lady who spent some time in Egypt and brought back a rather unusual story. She was at a bazaar on one of Cairo's side streets, and saw a skull being exhibited. She asked the proprietor about it. He told her it was the skull of Cleopatra.

Alongside that skull was a smaller one, which piqued her interest. When she asked about that one, the proprietor said: "That m'lady is also Cleopatra's - but as a child."

While it may not surprise us that a vendor in a tourist area would make up such a story, we immediately recognize the obvious truth that there can't be two heads! It is an obvious truth in the physical realm, but one that we seem to need to be reminded of in the spiritual realm. "And he [God] has put all things under his [Christ's] feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all." (Ephesians 1:22-23)

The church, the body of Christ, has only one head -- Jesus Christ. To use the words of a book by W. Griffith Thomas, "Christianity is Christ." Christ must be placed at the center of Christianity. He must be the focus of our faith.

Mr. Thomas made this observation in his book: "Christianity is the only religion in the world which rests on the Person of its founder. A man can be a faithful Mohammedan without in the least concerning himself with the person of Mohammed. So also a man can be a true and faithful Buddhist without knowing anything whatever about Buddha. It is quite different with Christianity [which] is so inextricably bound up with Christ that our view of the Person of Christ involves and determines our view of Christianity...."

And when Christ is placed at the center of our religion, then all the other elements of Chris­tianity take on a completely new meaning. When he becomes the focus of our faith, we will see the church differently. The church isn't just an organization, but it is rather it is the spiritual body of Christ on earth. And when we see the church differently, we see ourselves differently as well. We are not just affiliated with an organization, as though we had joined the Kiwanis or the Elks Club. We see ourselves as members of the body of Christ who are joined together in unity and who live for the purpose of serving Jesus Christ, our one and only head.

Jesus, You taught Your followers that You are the vine and we are the branches. If we remain in You we will bear much fruit. Fruitfulness in our lives is not automatic nor can it be purchased or inherited since You are the sole source of our fruitfulness. Help us to be healthy vines bearing much fruit so that we bring glory to You and also bear witness to the world that we are truly Your disciples. Amen.

Tuesday prayer & verses (25 08 2009)

Thought for the day

A man dressed as Napoleon went to see a psychiatrist at the urging of his wife. "What's your problem?" the doctor asked."I have no problem," the man replied.

"I'm one of the most famous people in the world. I have a great army behind me. I have all the money I'll ever need, and I live in great luxury."

"Then why are you here?"

"It's because of my wife," the man said. "She thinks she's Mrs. Smith."

Pride tends to do two things with us. It causes us to see ourselves as more important than what we really are. That's why Paul wrote, "...Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought..." (Rom. 12:3, NIV).

But pride also causes us to see other people as less important than what they are. Someone has described us as having a "crab mentality." The term refers to a pot of crabs in which one tries to escape over the side, but is relentlessly pulled down by the others in the pot. As humans, we often act the same way. If we can't be somebody great, we can at least pull down others around us so that we look better by comparison!

In the Corinthian church, there was a lot of competition involving spiritual gifts. Those who had the more prominent or public gifts, such as the ability to preach or the ability to speak in different languages, regarded themselves as superior to those who held what they viewed as "less significant" gifts.

Paul says, though:"On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor....But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other." (I Cor. 12:22-25, NIV).

May God help us not only to ourselves as He sees us, but to see others around us as He sees them as well.

Prayer

Father, I am thankful for the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures that provides an objective and accurate guide for every season of my life. The Bible is a lamp unto my feet and a light for the path that lies before me. It teaches, convicts, corrects, and trains me in the ways of godliness. Though many will choose other authorities to guide their lives, I choose Your Holy Book to equip me for the works You’ve called me to do in Your name. I rely on its inspired texts to sustain me in my lifetime commitment to walk in Your ways as I travel the Bible Road that leads to eternal life. Amen.

Monday prayer & verses (24 08 2009)

Thought for the day

English professors love to catch the errors students make in their term papers, and they love nothing better than to catch mixed metaphors. The "friends and survivors" of Calvin College English department collected this list of mixed metaphors and posted them on their web site:

"He swept the rug under the carpet."
"She's burning the midnight oil at both ends."
"It was so cold last night I had to throw another blanket on the fire."
"It's time to step up to the plate and cut the mustard."
"She's robbing Peter to pay the piper."
"He's up a tree without a paddle."
"Beware my friend...you are skating on hot water."
"Keep your ear to the grindstone."
"Sometimes you've gotta stick your neck out on a limb."
"Some people sail through life on a bed of roses like a knife slicing through butter."

There are no mixed metaphors in the Bible...or are there? There are certainly many metaphors (we are the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world", Jesus is the "good shepherd" and the "bread of life" -- the list could go on and on). But surely there are no mixed metaphors. There's one scripture, though, that I've often struggled with because the metaphor seemed out of place.

In Matthew 6:19-24, Jesus is talking about our attitude toward material things -- "treasures on earth", "mammon". Right in the middle of this passage, though, Jesus says, "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:23-24)

Talking about a "good eye" and a bad eye" seems somewhat out of place in this discussion. But I learned something recently. I was doing some research on the word "envy" and checked the dictionary to see what the derivation of our English word is. Envy comes from two Latin words meaning "to look upon". Past usage included the phrase "to cast an evil eye upon".

An "evil eye" is one that looks with envy, A "good eye" is one that does not. Knowing that sheds new light on this passage. The metaphor (as always) is so very fitting, and serves as reminder to me that I need to learn the value of contentment in my own life.Is your eye good?

Prayer

“Jesus, we know that none of us are 100% humble, for we are clothed in these mortal, fallible bodies. But we do know that You are completely humble and we look to You as our example. As we clothe ourselves in Your righteousness we can overcome the pride that is ever before us. We recognize that no good thing can come from us, but all that is good comes from You. Friday prayer & verses (21 08 2009)

Thought for the day

Whether you watch it on TV or not, you all know of the "Survivor" TV show. As you might expect, plans for the next "Survivor" series have leaked out.

Mark Burnett, producer of "Survivor", plans to enlist 12 men who will be dropped in an unidentified suburb with a van, six kids (each of whom play two sports and take either a musical instrument or danceclass) and no access to fast food.

They must keep the house clean, correct all homework (receiving at least a "C+" on all papers), complete one science project, cook (OK, they can bring one cookbook), do laundry, care for a dog and a cat, grocery shop, buy birthday presents for kids' friends, etc.

Oh, and they also have access to television only when the kids are asleep and all chores are done, and none of the TV's have remote controls.

The competitions will consist of such things as attending a PTA meeting and accurately reporting the results; cleaning up after a sick child at 3:00 a.m; getting kids to church; making an Indian hut model with six toothpicks, a tortilla and one marker; and getting a 4-year-old to eat a serving of peas.

The kids vote them off.

The winner gets to go back to his job. We all have to learn to survive. Survival that has little to do with living on a desert island or in the Outback of Australia, but much to do with just "getting by" from day to day. Perhaps you've had to learn to "survive" after being diagnosed with a deadly disease. Perhaps you've learned to "survive" while raising several children alone after the death or desertion of a mate. Perhaps you've had to "survive" the last few days of a month as you juggled expenses to make sure that there was enough money to cover meals before the next payday.

If you're in "survival mode," it's difficult for you to plan years down the road. It's all you can do to get through the day. And, as much as you might pray for it, you may find that there is no "immunity." The hardships don't disappear. And you learn that there is nothing you can do but lean on God.

Which is exactly what he wants you to learn. "Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Cor. 12:8-10)May God's grace be with you as you strive to "survive" the difficulties you face today (and be assured that his grace is sufficient).

Lord Jesus, as I commit myself to You this day, I ask that You make me a glowing ember of Your truth, Your wisdom, and Your compassionate mercy. I want my light to shine for You so that all glory will be directed back to You, my source of light. If I find myself in the midst of a circle of employees engaged in ungodly conversation help me not to blend in. But rather help me to be the light of Your glory in my conversation, full of grace seasoned with salt, so that I will know how to respond to each person. I ask that You would reveal to me any false motivation for carrying out good deeds. Remind me that it is for Your glory that I do these things. It is neither for the praise of others nor for personal advancement, but the advancement of the Gospel. Lord, help me to reach just one today with an unexpected act of kindness that will direct the recipient’s thoughts toward my Father in heaven. In Your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Below are some observations circulating under the title "Things I've Learned From Children" (author unknown). Those of you who are parents will sympathize. Those of you who are not will have something to look forward to! :-)

** If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42-pound boy wearing Pound Puppy underwear and a Superman cape.

** It is strong enough however to spread paint on all four walls of a 20 by 20 foot room.

** You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on.

** When using the ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit.

** A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way.

** The glass in windows (even double pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.

** When you hear the toilet flush and the words "Uh-oh," it's already too late.

** A six year old can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year-old man says they can only do it in the movies.

** If you use a waterbed as home plate while wearing baseball shoes it does not leak -- it explodes.

** A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. foot house 4 inches deep.

** No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on water.

** Pool filters do not like Jell-O.

** Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.

** Always look in the oven before you turn it on.

** Plastic toys do not like ovens.

** The fire department in San Diego has at least a 5-minute response time.

** The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earth worms dizzy.

** It will however make cats dizzy.

** Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.

A good sense of humor will get you through most problems in life (unfortunately, mostly in retrospect). Allow me to add a few more things that we can learn from children: purity, humility, willingness to learn, quickness to forgive, and a trust in our Father.

"At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, 'Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:1-4)

Find a child today, take a good look, and learn!

Wednesday prayer & verses (19 08 2009)

Thought for the day

Once there was a king who had presented his daughter, the princess, with a Beautiful diamond necklace.

The necklace was stolen and his people in the kingdom searched everywhere but could not find it. Some said a bird may have stolen it. The king then asked them all to search for it and put a reward for $50,000 for anyone who found it.

One day a clerk was walking home along a river next to an industrial area. This river was completely polluted and filthy and smelly. As he was walking, the clerk saw a shimmering in the river and when he looked, he saw the diamond necklace.

He decided to try and catch it so that he could get the $50,000 reward. He put his hand in the filthy, dirty river and grabbed at the necklace, but somehow missed it and didn't catch it..He took his hand out and looked again and the necklace was still there. He tried again, this time he walked in the river and dirtied his pants in the filthy river and put his whole arm in to catch the necklace.

But strangely, he still missed the necklace! He came out and started walking away, feeling depressed. Then again he saw the necklace, right there. This time he was determined to get it, no matter what. He decided to plunge into the river, althoughit was a disgusting thing to do as the river was polluted, and his whole body would become filthy. He plunged in, and searched everywhere for the necklace and yet he failed. This time he was really bewildered and came out feeling very depressed that he could not get the necklace that would get him $50,000.

Just then a saint who was walking by, saw him, and asked him what was the matter. The clerk didn't want to share the secret with the saint, thinking the saint might take the necklace for himself, so he refused to tell the saint anything. But the saint could see this man was troubled and being compassionate, again asked the clerk to tell him the problem and promised that he would not tell anyone about it. The clerk mustered some courage and decided to put some faith in the saint. He told the saint about the necklace and how he tried and tried to catch it, but kept failing.

The saint then told him that perhaps he should try looking upwards, toward the branches of the tree, instead of in the filthy river. The clerk looked up and true enough, the necklace was DANGLING on the branch of a tree. He had been trying to capture a mere reflection of the real necklace all this time.

Moral of the story:

Material happiness is just like the filthy, pollutedriver; because it is a mere reflection of the TRUE happiness in the spiritual world.We don't achieve the happiness we are looking for, no matter how hard we endeavor in the material life.

Instead we should look upwards, toward God, who is the source of real happiness, and stop chasing after the reflection of this happiness in the material world. This spiritual happiness is the only thing that can satisfy us completely.

May the Lord help us LOOK UP TO HIM.

Father, we pray for a sincere heart that is sensitive to Biblical truths as they apply to our lives. We struggle with forgetfulness and indifference – twin enemies of a living vibrant relationship with You. Father, we invite You to arrange the circumstances of our lives that will keep us patiently looking to You and asking for Your divine guidance. We earnestly seek You for spiritual revival. Revival for messengers who feed our indifference in favor of modern accepted philosophies of this world rather than the life-changing truths of the Gospel. Revival for those who sit in the church pews week after week who hear the life-changing truths of Your Word but leave unyielded to the working of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Revive both the messenger and listener so that our lives are a demonstration of the reality of a vibrant walk with Your Son, Jesus, our living Savior and Lord. Amen

Tuesday prayer & verses (18 08 2009)

Thought for the day

A 60-year-old couple was celebrating their 40th year of marriage. During the celebration, a genie appeared and said, "Because you have been such a loving couple all those years, I would like to give you each one wish.

"The wife quickly chimed in, "I want to travel around the world." The genie waved his arms and, POOF!, she had the tickets in her hand.

Next, it was the husband's turn. He paused for a moment, then said shyly, "Well, I'd like to have a wife 30 years younger than me."

The genie waved his arms and, POOF!, he was 90 years old.

We seem to be fascinated by stories of magic genies granting wishes (why is it usually three wishes?). Which of us hasn't sat and wondered at some point in time, "If a genie granted me three wishes, what would I wish for?

"God is not, as some imagine Him, a magic genie waiting at our beck and call to give us everything we ask for (see James 4:3). But there is certainly that level of power and ability at His disposal. Listen to these words of Paul:

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21, NIV)

God is able to do more than I ask of Him. That's pretty amazing, considering that I have some pretty difficult requests. Furthermore (and this is really mind-boggling), God is able to do more than I can even imagine! I don't know about you, but I can imagine quite a bit. Yet, Paul assures us that God is not only able to do all that we ask or imagine -- he is able to do more, immeasurably more!

When things in life are beyond my control, I find comfort in knowing that God has such power -- not the power of an imaginary genie but the power of a living awesome Father. Sometimes we offer to pray for others saying, "It's the least I can do." How wrong we are. Considering the power of God, it's the most we can do!

Prayer

Father, You have placed authority figures in our lives from birth to our final days on earth. Some bless us greatly while others challenge us fiercely. In areas where You have given us the privilege of being an authority figure may we be responsible role models, for we know it is not just the talk that people hear, but the walk that people see. As each of us are called to submit to our family, spiritual, employee, and governmental leaders may we do so with cheerfulness so that we are a blessing rather than a grievous burden. But when those to whom we submit conflict with our supreme authority we pray for conviction and courage to stand for righteousness in obedience to Your commands. We pray for this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, amen.

Monday prayer & verses (17 08 2009)

Thought for the day

The story is told of a Japanese company and an American company who decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri river. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day the Japanese won by a mile.

Afterwards, the American team became very discouraged and morally depressed. The American management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found. A "measurement team," made up of senior management was formed. They would investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was that the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the Americans had 1 person rowing and 8 people steering. So American management hired a consulting company and paid them incredible amounts of money. They advised that too many people were steering the boat and not enough people were rowing.

To prevent losing to the Japanese again next year, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the "Rowing Team Quality First Program," with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rower:

"We must give the rower empowerment and enrichments through this quality program.

"The next year the Japanese won by 2 miles.Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. Then they gave a High Performance Award to the steering managers and distributed the money saved as bonuses to the senior executives.

Perhaps you've seen the same thing happen at work -- or in the church. We seem to have lots of people who want to be managers (leaders), but not so many who want to do the work. And far too often, we have seen committees appointed to decide what to do when what needed to happen was for someone just to get out there and do it.

"But Jesus called them to Himself and said, 'You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave -- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.' " (Matt. 20:25-28)May you follow in the footsteps of Jesus as you search for ways to be a servant today.

Prayer

Jesus, we consider everything that You went through was for our benefit. Your tender response to betrayal and cruelty serves as an example to us when we are treated unjustly. Your obedience in life and especially Your death on the cross shows us how to remain steadfast in the face of tremendous suffering. You embodied the very teaching You spoke to Your followers as You carried out the will of the Father no matter the cost. Each wound that tore Your flesh brought us spiritual and physical healing. You were numbered with the transgressors so that we could be numbered with the saints. Because Your death was redemptive in power, the dark cross of Calvary has a wondrous attraction where we witness Your divine sacrifice on our own personal behalf. What wondrous, amazing love; it demands my soul, my life, my all. Amen.

Friday prayer & verses (14 08 2009)

Thought for the day

A husband had just finished reading the book "Man Of The House" while making his commute home from work.

When he arrived home, he stormed into the house and walked directly up to his wife. Pointing his finger in her face, he said, "From now on I want you to know that I am the man of this house and my word is law! You are to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a sumptuous dessert afterward. Then, after dinner, you're going to draw my bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?"

His wife thought for a moment and responded, "The Funeral Director is my guess."

Unfortunately, many husbands have the mistaken idea that that's what it means to be "the head of the wife" -- give orders and sit back, ready to be waited on hand and foot. Paul, though, gave a completely different picture:

"For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior....Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." (Eph. 5:23,25)

What Paul is saying is that headship is not so much a position of privilege as it is a position of responsibility. It is not the responsibility of the head to "lord it over" the wife, but rather to take a position of service and sacrifice. Christ, our head, was willing to humble himself to meet our every need, even to the point of giving up his life. He serves as the ultimate example to all of us who are husbands.

Just a few questions for you husbands to think about: What have you given up lately for your wife? What have you done lately that shows her how much you love her? Are you more concerned with serving or being served?

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."

Generation by generation we proclaim the salvation that comes through faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

John and Bob were two of the bitterest golf rivals at the club. Neither man trusted the other's arithmetic. One day they were playing a heated match and watching each other like hawks.

After finishing on the fourth green and marking his six on the scorecard, John asked Bob, "What'd you have?" Bob went through the motions of mentally counting up. "Six!" he said and then hastily corrected himself. "No -- a five."

Calmly, John marked the scorecard, saying out loud "Eight!" "Eight?" Bob said, "I couldn't have had eight."John said, "Nope, you claimed six, then changed it to five. But actually you had seven." "Then why did you mark down eight?" asked Bob.John told him, "One stroke penalty, for improving your LIE."

Golfers are notorious for stretching the truth (that's a nice way of saying they lie), but they're certainly not the only ones who do so. In fact, you probably find that lying comes all too easy.

When we're caught doing something we shouldn't be doing, it's easy to lie to try to cover up our involvement. When we're asked to do something we don't want to do, it's easy to lie about plans we haven't made.

Unfortunately, every lie we tell makes it that much easier the next time. And some people have spent so much time "improving their lies" that they have trouble distinguishing between the real truth and the "truth" they have manufactured.

God is concerned that we be a people of truth. "Therefore, putting away lying, 'Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,' for we are members of one another." (Eph. 4:25)

Diogenes was a philosopher in ancient Greece. He was said to have walked through the streets of Athens, carrying a lighted lantern in broad daylight in a futile search for an honest man. There are people all around you who are searching for the same thing. May they find in you someone who will tell the truth, no matter what (even on the golf course!).

Prayer

Father, we long to hear Your voice which gives us direction, affirmation, conviction, reproof, and comfort. Help us with the spiritual exercise of observing how You are working in our own heart and in the lives of those around us. And we especially need to observe the ways You are present in the daily grind of life. The daily routine can easily squeeze out those special sightings of Your glorious presence and supernatural workings where You make visible that which is not seen with human eyes, but only through the eyes of faith. Faithful and True God, just as You formed the universe with Your own hands, You also shape the human heart with Your own Spirit, bringing it into conformity to Your will for our lives. Help us to surrender ourselves fully to You so that we are among those who have supernatural faith which makes us confident of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see with human eyes.

Pick me up

PICK ME UP

My brother in law has this cute little girl that follows her mother everywhere. Her deepest cry is “pick me up!” As her mother picks her up, the phone rings, the gate alarm goes off, the kettle boils and the gardener wants to know whether he could leave earlier today. All of these tasks (multi tasking of a housewife) is done with this “pick me up” in her arms. At the end of the day when exhaustion settles in and it all becomes too much, we dread the possibility of another day like this!

We are just like that in many ways. We pick up so many things along the way that wear us down and instead of dealing with what we have picked up, we try to handle everything else in our lives to the best of our ability with our hands filled with “pick me up things”

LUKE 19:30-34 Jesus says to the disciples, “As you go, you will find a donkey'scolt tied.” Too many times we live our lives tied down like this. There was nothing wrong with this beast of burden apart from the fact that it was tied down ! The trap of today’s society is that we are so tied up that what God actually wants to use us for becomes too much !

Allow me to illustrate:

There was once a man with an imaginary friend. It was a little puppy. At first he would groom this imaginary friend and after a while he thought it a good idea to start feeding this friend. After a while he got more and more involved with this friend and had to bathe it and so on !

This friend became unbearable and demanded his time more and more. He would barely be on the phone or this friend would scream out "pick me up" He would scarcely be in the car or this friend would scream "pick me up" This imaginary friend started demanding more and more of his time to the point that he had to walk, talk and eat with this thing in his arms all the time!

Then this thing started demanding time even when he tried to sleep. It would scream out "pick me up" the moment he fell asleep. Totally consuming him, his time and his relationships. It constantly demanded "pick me up" It finally drove him nuts. He ended up in an institution where all he could do and did was, held this imaginary thing which by now was six times his actual size!

Every moment he had for himself was consumed by this constant demand of "pick me up!" It seemed that the people in the nut house understood because it was madness! We pick up stuff like this all the time. We carry it a bit in the beginning and have the power to put it down. It suddenly demands from me "pick me up." It starts consuming our friendships, rest and every activity, crying out "pick me up!"

Then it starts devouring my sleep screaming out "pick me up!" It's totally overgrown, a beast! I can't put it down anymore!You can break the cycle and put it down!

In HEBREWS 12 it instructs us to strip off and throw aside every encumbrance, meaning get rid of unnecessary weight and that sin which so cleverly clings to us. It tells us that we have the power to put it down!

Let it go!

We must come to the place where we cast the whole of our care upon Him. Come to the place where we cast all of our anxieties, all our worries, all our concerns, once and for all on Him.He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully (1 Peter 5:7).

If we are not satisfied in the way we serve the Lord we may not expect that His goal will reach each and every one of us.

Message from the writer.
On the 29th of January 2008 our Father give me a order from the word He gave me during the last six months, to write a book. I asked Him what I must name the book, and He give me a vision of what the reader must see on the front of the book. With the vision, He give me the last words of the book "PREPARE YOUR LAND". "Prepare your land" is a order from God to all His children, to prepare ourselves for the coming of His son JESUS. In the vision you can see each and everyone of us must prepare our own land. Nobody can or will help you.

It is necessary that everyone must plough his own land, without oxes and it is not always easy. The word that God give us in this book, is straight, but being given with love. He is our Father and He give us direct instructions how to serve Him to be His bride. There is false propositions that God want to get rid of with the help of His word. He love us very much and want to prepare His children to be honest.

In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as chief among the mountains it will be established as chief among the mountains, it will be raised above the hills and peoples will stream to it. Tuesday, I sent out a list of guidelines from a 1950's home economics textbook on how married women should treat their husbands (if you did not get a copy of that Post, you can find it in the archives at www.leonpotgieter.blogspot.com). Today, as promised, I share with you the updated version for the '90s woman (author unknown):

1. Have dinner ready: Make reservations ahead of time. If your day becomes too hectic just leave him a voice mail message regarding where you'd like to eat and at what time. This lets him know that your day has been terrible and gives him an opportunity to change your mood.

2. Prepare yourself: A quick stop at the "Woolies" counter on your way home will do wonders for your outlook (don't forget to use his credit card!)

3. Clear away the clutter: Call the housekeeper and let her know you'll need her for an extra day this week. Tell her that any miscellaneous items left on the floor by the children can be placed in the Goodwill box in the garage.

4. Prepare the children: Drop them off at grandma's!

5. Minimize the noise: When he arrives at home remind him that the washer and garbage disposal are still not working properly and thenoise is driving you crazy (but do this in a nice way and greet him with a warm smile...this way he might fix it faster).

6. Some DON'TS: Don't greet him with problems and complaints. Let him speak first, and then your complaints will get more attention and remain fresh in his mind throughout dinner. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Simply remind him that the last one home does the cooking and the cleanup.

7. Make him comfortable: Remind him where he can find a warm fuzzy blanket if he's cold. This will show you really care.

8. Listen to him: But don't ever let him get the last word.

9. Make the evening his: a chance to get the washer and garbage disposal fixed.

10. The Goal: To try to keep things amicable without reminding him that you make more money than he does.

Thanks to all of you who wrote and had such nice things to say about Tuesday’s article. It seems that the message struck a chord with quite a few of you (both young and old, both men and women). As I said in that message, I truly believe that applying the principle of "seeking to please one another" would strengthen our marriages.And once we have applied that principle in our marriages, then we could take the drastic step of applying it in the church (after all, that was the setting Paul had in mind when he wrote the words quoted from Philippians 2:4).

How many church disputes do you suppose have occurred just because somebody didn't get their way? As difficult as it may be to apply that principle in our marriages, it is even more difficult to apply it to all Christians. "You mean I'm just supposed to let him have it his way? But that's not fair! What I want is just as important as what he wants!

"What a difference would be made if we could all, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus...." (Phil. 2:5). Selfishness is difficult to get rid of, but we must as we seek to grow in love, for love "does not seek its own." (I Cor. 13:5).

Father, please forgive me of those times when I have been so centered on my needs and my desires that I have been blind to the needs and desires of those around me. Help me to truly take on the "heart of a servant" that Jesus demonstrated while he was on this earth. In His precious name, amen.

Lord Jesus, as I commit myself to You this day, I ask that You make me a glowing ember of Your truth, Your wisdom, and Your compassionate mercy. I want my light to shine for You so that all glory will be directed back to You, my source of light. If I find myself in the midst of a circle of employees engaged in ungodly conversation help me not to blend in. But rather help me to be the light of Your glory in my conversation, full of grace seasoned with salt, so that I will know how to respond to each person. I ask that You would reveal to me any false motivation for carrying out good deeds. Remind me that it is for Your glory that I do these things. It is neither for the praise of others nor for personal advancement, but the advancement of the Gospel. Lord, help me to reach just one today with an unexpected act of kindness that will direct the recipient’s thoughts toward my Father in heaven. In Your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Tuesday prayer & verses (11 08 2009)

The following is reported to be taken from a 1950's Home Economics textbook intended for high school girls, teaching them how to prepare for married life (Wednesday, I will share with you the updated '90s version):

1. Have dinner ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal - on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him, and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.

2. Prepare yourself: Take 15 minutes to rest so you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people. Be a little gay and a little more interesting. His boring day may need a lift.

3. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up school books, toys, paper, etc. Then run a dust cloth over the tables. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too.

4. Prepare the children: Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces if they are small, comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

5. Minimize the noise: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of washer, dryer, dishwasher, or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him. Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

6. Some DON'TS: Don't greet him with problems or complaints. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Count this as minor compared with what he might have gone through that day.

7. Make him comfortable: Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest he lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speakin a low, soft, soothing and pleasant voice. Allow him to relax and unwind.

8. Listen to him: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first.

9. Make the evening his: Never complain if he does not take you out to dinner or to other places of entertainment; instead try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his need to be home and relax.

10. The Goal: Try to make your home a place of peace and order where your husband can relax.

I can see it now -- The women are ready to send in their unsubscription notices, while the men are all running off copies to post on the refrigerator door!

My, how things have changed in 50 years! At the risk of being misunderstood, I think there's much to be learned from the textbook above (stay with me on this one). It strikes me that the attitude proposed during the 50's was "do everything you can to make your spouse happy", while the attitude of our day is "you better do everything you can to make me happy". The concept of actually making a concerted effort to please the other one seems antiquated. But, for Christians, it shouldn't be!

The biggest problem I see with the textbook above is that the sacrifice is lop-sided. Women were told to make sacrifices for the well-being of their husbands, but men were not expected to do any such thing. And that could not be further from Biblical truth. Husbands, in fact, are called to a higher level of sacrifice. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it." (Eph. 5:25).

Just imagine, though. What if both husbands and wives put as much effort into pleasing one another as the textbook above suggests? What if both husbands and wives stopped asking, "What have you done for me lately?" and started asking, "What can I do for you?" I know, often in a marriage one does all the giving and the other does all the taking, but just suppose that both spouses really made an effort to follow Paul's instruction: "Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." (Phil. 2:4). Sounds like the ingredients of a marriage made in heaven!

Monday prayer & verses (10 08 2009)

Thought for the day

The story is told of a water bearer in India who had two large pots. They hung on each end of a pole which he carried across his neck, but one of the pots had a crack in it. While the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots of water to his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you.""Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"

"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said.

In his compassion, the water bearer said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path.

"Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.

The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house.

"It is an amazing thing (but true) that God is able to accomplish some wonderful things through our efforts, in spite of our imperfections. Paul said of his role as a preacher of the gospel:

"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us." (2 Cor. 4:7). Though we may often feel inadequate and useless, if we will continue about the task that God has given us, we will produce fruit and influence lives in ways we may not even be aware of.

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." (I Cor. 15:58).

May your life "abound" this day in the work of the Lord! Though you may feel like a "cracked pot", your efforts are not in vain.

Prayer

Father, when You took the dust of the ground to form man and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life You had a purpose for his existence on earth. And You have a purpose for all human life. Forgive us for assuming that we know more than You, the Creator of life, in willfully choosing whether one is allowed to live and another is destined to die before one breathes his or her first independent breath. We thank You for the millions who take a visible stand for life, based not on a popular theme but on truths established in Your Holy Word. Help us to be vigilant in doing what is right and good in Your sight, even when it is inconvenient and costly to our personal lives. In our disposable society help us never to dispose of human life that You created or to dispose of truths that You teach us to live by in favor of a political, intellectual, or financial agenda. We pray for those in the abortion industry who are motivated by financial gain in destroying innocent life much like Judas who took the 30 pieces of silver as He handed Jesus over to those who would crucify Him. Like Joseph’s brothers who took the 20 pieces of silver in exchange for selling their innocent brother. Father, we look to You in faith asking that You speak to the indifferent and bigoted hearts that cause innocent lives to be slaughtered every minute of every day. We pray this impassioned prayer in the name of Jesus who said, “I am the Way, the Truth, the Life” and the only way we can have presence with You or understand truth is through Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Thought for the day

The Value of Experience

"Sir, What is the secret of your success?" a reporter asked a bank president.

"Two words."

"And, sir, what are they?"

"Right decisions."

"And how do you make right decisions?"

"One word.""And, sir, what is that?"

"Experience."

"And how do you get experience?"

"Two words.""And, sir, what are they?"

"Wrong decisions."

There's a measure of truth in that. Though we can (and should) learn from the mistakes of others, experience truly does seem to be "the best teacher." The experience of making wrong decisions in the past should help us to learn so that we make better decisions in the future. But are we willing to learn?"And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man...." (I Timothy 1:12-13)

Paul is a great example of someone who learned from his past mistakes and, as a result of that experience, made better decisions in his effort to serve God.

Father, once again I come asking forgiveness for the many times I've let you down. As I confess to you my transgressions, I pray that you will help me to learn from my mistakes -- to recognize the consequences of following my stubborn will, to realize the heartache you feel when I turn a deaf ear to you, to learn from my error the need to follow your word more closely. I have made wrong decisions, but I pray that the experience of doing so will help me to develop the wisdom necessary to make better decisions in the future, as I strive to draw closer to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Prayer
Father, You have placed authority figures in our lives from birth to our final days on earth. Some bless us greatly while others challenge us fiercely. In areas where You have given us the privilege of being an authority figure may we be responsible role models, for we know it is not just the talk that people hear, but the walk that people see. As each of us are called to submit to our family, spiritual, employee, and governmental leaders may we do so with cheerfulness so that we are a blessing rather than a grievous burden. But when those to whom we submit conflict with our supreme authority we pray for conviction and courage to stand for righteousness in obedience to Your commands. We pray for this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, amen.

Thursday prayer & verses (06 08 2009)

I have something to share and would like to urge all of you to do something. On Sunday my wife and I were driving and at a robot there was a man standing with a board in his hand, you could see he is not the normal homeless. He had a board in his hands stating “I’m hungry” and I asked my wife to give him some money. She gave him some money and the Holy Ghost spoke to her to tell him that Jesus loves him, just then the robot turned green and as she told that to him he started crying saying he does not think that Jesus loves him.

To this day it bothers me that I did not go back to him to talk to him to find out why he said he did not think Jesus loves him. If I stumble upon him again I certainly will make it a point to talk to him, you see we are so used to just give money for the quick fix without getting involved. There might be a engineer, attorney etc. in those people and we might not know why they turned out the way they did. Perhaps if we take some time to speak to them and tell them of the awesome love of God they might turn their life around. A second thing is what my wife mastered – if she goes to a shop and the teller do not greet her she would keep a hold on the money and will tell him, good morning and how are you today, do you know that Jesus loves you. It made such an impact that when they see her they started to talk to her about this and that.

You see they might have had a bad experience with another client and is now scared of talking to the people, a thing that I always do as well is whenever we go to a place to sit down to eat whenever they bring the bill I will always write on it Jesus Loves You with just a scripture that comes to mind but not the whole verse e.g. Isaiah 54:17 and you will see the change it makes to them. Now a big thanks to Ernest for giving me today’s story to post.

Thought for the day

Good morning said a woman as she walked up to the man sitting on ground.
The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before. "Leave me alone," he growled....

To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling -- her even white teeth displayed in dazzling rows.

"Are you hungry?" she asked.

"No," he answered sarcastically. "I've just come from dining with the president. Now go away."

The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm.

"What are you doing, lady?" the man asked angrily. "I said to leave me alone.

Just then a policeman came up. "Is there any problem, ma'am?" he asked..

"No problem here, officer," the woman answered. "I'm just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?"

The officer scratched his head. "That's old Jack. He's been a fixture around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?"

"See that cafeteria over there?" she asked. "I'm going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold for awhile."

"Are you crazy, lady?" the homeless man resisted. "I don't want to go in there!" Then he felt strong hands grab his other arm and lift him up. "Let me go, officer. I didn't do anything." "This is a good deal for you, Jack," the officer answered. "Don't blow it."

Finally, and with some difficulty, the woman and the police officer got Jack into the cafeteria and sat him at a table in a remote corner. It was the middle of the morning, so most of the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch bunch had not yet arrived... The manager strode across the cafeteria and stood by his table.

"What's going on here, officer?" he asked. "What is all this, is this man in trouble?" "This lady brought this man in here to be fed," the policeman answered.

"Not in here!" the manager replied angrily. "Having a person like that here is bad for business."

Old Jack smiled a toothless grin. "See, lady. I told you so. Now if you'll let me go. I didn't want to come here in the first place."

The woman turned to the cafeteria manager and smiled. "Sir, are you familiar with Eddy and Associates, the banking firm down the street?"

"Of course I am," the manager answered impatiently. "They hold their weekly meetings in one of my banquet rooms."

"And do you make a goodly amount of money providing food at these weekly meetings?"

"What business is that of yours?"

"I, sir, am Penelope Eddy, president and CEO of the company." "Oh." The woman smiled again. "I thought that might make a difference." She glanced at the cop who was busy stifling a giggle. "Would you like to join us in a cup of coffee and a meal, officer?" "No thanks, ma'am," the officer replied. "I'm on duty." "Then, perhaps, a cup of coffee to go?" "Yes, ma'am. That would be very nice."

The cafeteria manager turned on his heel, "I'll get your coffee for you right away, officer." The officer watched him walk away. "You certainly put him in his place," he said. "That was not my intent. Believe it or not, I have a reason for all this." She sat down at the table across from her amazed dinner guest. She stared at him intently.

"Jack, do you remember me?"

Old Jack searched her face with his old, rheumy eyes. "I think so -- I mean you do look familiar."

"I'm a little older perhaps," she said. "Maybe I've even filled out more than in my younger days when you worked here, and I came through that very door, cold and hungry." "Ma'am?" the officer said questioningly. He couldn't believe that such a magnificently turned out woman could ever have been hungry. "I was just out of college," the woman began. "I had come to the city looking for a job, but I couldn't find anything. Finally I was down to my last few cents and had been kicked out of my apartment. I walked the streets for days. It was February and I was cold and nearly starving. I saw this place and walked in on the off chance that I could get something to eat."

Jack lit up with a smile. "Now I remember," he said. "I was behind the serving counter. You came up and asked me if you could work for something to eat. I said that it was against company policy."

"I know," the woman continued. "Then you made me the biggest roast beef sandwich that I had ever seen, gave me a cup of coffee, and told me to go over to a corner table and enjoy it. I was afraid that you would get into trouble... Then, when I looked over and saw you put the price of my food in the cash register, I knew then that everything would be all right."

"So you started your own business?" Old Jack said.

"I got a job that very afternoon. I worked my way up. Eventually I started my own business that, with the help of God, prospered." She opened her purse and pulled out a business card. "When you are finished here, I want you to pay a visit to a Mr. Lyons...He's the personnel director of my company. I'll go talk to him now and I'm certain he'll find something for you to do around the office." She smiled. "I think he might even find the funds to give you a little advance so that you can buy some clothes and get a place to live until you get on your feet.. If you ever need anything, my door is always opened to you."

There were tears in the old man's eyes. "How can I ever thank you?" he said.

"Don't thank me," the woman answered. "To God goes the glory. Thank Jesus... He led me to you." Outside the cafeteria, the officer and the woman paused at the entrance before going their separate ways... "Thank you for all your help, officer," she said.

"On the contrary, Ms. Eddy," he answered. "Thank you. I saw a miracle today, something that I will never forget. And..And thank you for the coffee."

If you have missed knowing me, you have missed nothing. If you have missed some of my emails, you might have missed a laugh. But, if you have missed knowing my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, you have missed everything in the world.

Have a Wonderful Day. May God Bless You Always and don't forget that when you "cast your bread upon the waters," you never know how it will be returned to you.. God is so big He can cover the whole world with his Love and so small He can curl up inside your heart..

When God leads you to the edge of the cliff, trust Him fully and let go. Only 1 of 2 things will happen, either He'll catch you when you fall, or He'll teach you how to fly! The power of one sentence! God is going to shift things around for you today and let things work in your favor.

God closes doors no man can open & God opens doors no man can close.. If you need God to open some doors for you...just pray to God and ask Him.

Prayer

Father, we know Your love because You first loved us. You gave Your one and only Son to die for our sins so that we would not perish but spend eternity in heaven with You. As our roots grow down into Your love we gain strength, understanding, and maturity. Though we cannot grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, we can respond in love to You. Just as we rely on the love You have for us, may You find our love consistent and reliable. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Wednesday prayer & verses (05 08 2009)

Thought for the day

01. God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.

02. Dear God: I have a problem. Sometimes, it's me.

03. Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional.

04. There is no key to happiness. The door is always open.

05. Silence is often misinterpreted, but never misquoted.

06. Do the math. Count your blessings.

07. Faith is the ability to not panic.

08. Laugh every day, it's like inner jogging.

09. If we worry, we probably didn't pray. If we pray, we probably don't worry.

10. As a child of God, prayer is kind of like calling home every day.

11. Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.

12. The most important things in our homes are the people.

13. When we get tangled up in our problems, be still. God wants us to be still so He can untangle the knots for us.

14. A grudge is a heavy thing to carry.

15. He who dies with the most toys is still dead. And who knows where he has gone?

16. We do not remember days, but moments. Life moves too fast, so enjoy your precious moments.

17. Nothing is real to you until we experience it, otherwise it's just hearsay.

18. It's all right to sit on our pity pot every now and again. Just be sure to flush when you are done.

19. Surviving and living our life successfully requires courage. The goals and dreams we seek require courage and risk-taking. Learn from the turtle -- it only makes progress when it sticks out its neck.

20. Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.

Prayer

Father, we are so grateful for the rope holders who’ve helped pull us out of despairing situations. Those who have given us an uplifting message, interceded in prayer on our behalf, given of their time and expertise to help us in our dilemma. We too want to be a rope holder and offer a word of encouragement, be a listening ear, and extend tender compassion and mercy to one in need. Help us to be Your hand extended to those in need we pray. Amen.
