Friday prayer & verses (19 12 2008)

Thought for the day

In France, Jacques LeFevrier left nothing to chance when he decided to commit suicide. He stood at the top of a tall cliff and tied a noose around his neck. He tied the other end of the rope to a large rock. He drank some poison and set fire to his clothes. He even tried to shoot himself at the last moment. He jumped and fired the pistol. The bullet missed him completely and cut through the rope above him.

Free of the threat of hanging, he plunged into the sea. The sudden dunking extinguished the flames and made him vomit the poison. He was dragged out of the water by a kind fisherman and was taken to hospital, where he died of hypothermia.

Talk about having a bad day!!! Those of us who are Christians can relate, though, as we seek to put to death what Paul called "the old man", the life we lived before becoming a Christian. Sometimes it's a struggle to get rid of the thoughts and the actions as the "old man" refuses to die.

"Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them." (Colossians 3:5-7)

Father, we seek to destroy all that stands between us and living the holy life you desire for us. Please help us in that effort. In Jesus' name, amen.Have a great day and a great weekend!

Verses

Ephesians 3:20

To him who can bring to pass all things far beyond what we ask or think of through the power which is at work in us,

2 Peter 1:3

as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

Matthew 12:15

But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew from there; and great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all.

Matthew 21:22

And everything that you pray for with faith, you will obtain."

James 1:4

But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Prayer

Jesus, our material accumulation initially brings great pleasure but it fades with each passing day. When we strive to hold onto that which is fleeting it deters us from that which has eternal significance. Lord, You promise to give us all things that we have need of as we seek You and Your Kingdom above all. May Your light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the glory of God in the face of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Father, there is nothing we can do in our own power or charm to receive Your favor, but we do receive Your forgiveness as we believe on Jesus and the wondrous work of His redemption through death on a cross. Then we are no longer orphans but are adopted into the family of believers who call You Father. And the amazing blessing is that You call us Your children. We receive You as our Father, our Savior, and our blessed eternal King.
